  1. Ken says:

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding? Explain.

I would like to try to help by calling emergencies and requesting an ambulance. I find it very sad that the couple who saw him dying would not have helped for fear of the Guardians. He was stabbed for wearing a purple jacket from his Royals team. Therefore, before he died he takes it off since it was the cause of his death. It is so sad to think that a young man 16-year-old person dies that way because he belongs to Royals, and worst of all is that these types of crimes occur daily throughout the world, and people who witness do not help for fear of being attacked by the person who committed the crime. In my opinion, I want to help some injured people or Andy because they need to help and also if I would help Andy, he could live now.

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message? (Support your claim with evidence from the story)

In my opinion, the message that the author is trying to tell us through this story is that something that everyone desires, like status and honor, is not useful in a situation that is emerging and very important. There are so many people who have a lot of money, high status, and honor. In some of those groups, there are so many people who are arrogant and could not see the surrounding in the reason why they stick to money, status, and honor too much. People like that do not think about other people, like a coworker, or subordinate, but think about just themselves. That’s why when they are in an emergency or important situation, other people would not help them. For example, there is a person who is VIP or top of the company. In a company, you have money, status, and honor. However, he is very arrogant. Whenever he decides something related to a company, he doesn’t consult with subordinates. Also whenever they suggest something to him for developing the company, he rejects that. And one day his company faced financial difficulties, and finally, the company went out of business, That’s why he lost everything, money and status and honor and so on, he had had, Who helped him? It would be difficult to find out the reasons.

a)What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding?

If I saw him on the sidewalk bleeding, I would help him and call to police and ambulance whatever there are any reasons such as he wearing the jacket which is written the royals. When I read this short story for the first time, I really disappointed with the sub-characters because no one did not try to help him even they found him on the sidewalk. In Japan, I have never seen this kind of situation, However, I guess most of the Japanese people will choose the same behavior as me. The reason why I choose this opinion is that if I encounter him and ignore him, I will feel regret for him after I leave there or come back home. In addition to that this stance can be said any types of the situation like school life, company, and society. For example, there is a student who does not understand what the teacher is saying in the class. At that time, I also help them because they need others to get it. I believe that both situations have the same meaning in the area of helping. Furthermore, this is the most important thing to have a positive relationship between us and others. Therefore, we should help him even though the person is a stranger or whom we do not like.

    b) what are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message?

In my opinion, this short story tries to tell us 2 types of things which are the importance of helping others and have to consider ourselves whenever. First, In this essay, no one din did not help Andy because of his jacket. The first reason is that the first guy could not understand his situation due to the fact that the guy had drunk too much alcohol before he met Andy. In addition, since other people thought he is Royal, they did not do anything. Finally, At the end of the story he died. After he died Laura came there, but it was too late. However, he was not Royals. It was Andy. Actually, every character could help him definitely, but they didn’t. For these reasons I believe the main ideas of this essay are these 2 things as I mentioned at the beginning.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding? Explain.

If I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding, I would have helped him because I can’t ignore him. If I didn’t help him, he will die. Also, he is very cold due to fierce rain and he had no voice, so I need to help immediately, and I have to call a cop and an ambulance. The cop may think I killed him, but I don’t care because he tried to yell for help anytime. No matter who he is, he should be treated as a human being. If someone is bleeding in front of me, I can’t leave the place. When I saw him for the first time, I’m sure that I’m surprised and can’t do anything. However, I believe that there is something I can do for him and then I will help him. Until cops and ambulances arrive, I will try to control the bleeding area and stop the bleeding as much as possible. Also, I would have done something similar to Laura, which came out in the last part. For this reason, I would have helped him the moment I saw him.

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message?

In my opinion, the main message of the story is that we should judge by the content, not the appearance when we are judging people. In life, people judge others by their appearance. Therefore, people also have to take care of their appearance. In the story, he wore a purple jacket, so everyone was judged “Royals”, not as Andy. Also, in the last part, a cop saw Andy and he noticed who he is. Then he changed his attitude. Regardless of what happened to him, the first thing he wrote it down as “Royal”, even though Laura claimed that “His name is Andy”. This means that the cop judged Andy based on his jacket and didn’t feel sympathy or feelings for him. Therefore, most important is his personality and his content. I think this story said that people should respect the person and they shouldn’t judge by appearance.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding? Explain.

If I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding, I would have helped him. Specifically, I would immediately call an ambulance and remove his jacket. And then I would do everything as far as I could before the ambulance arrived. Because if I choose that I don’t help him and then he dies, I will for sure regret that choice. Also, I think that the story tells us about social responsibility. In the story, the young couple, Freddy and Angela, clearly recognized the seriousness of Andy’s injury. But, their fear of the rival gang and lack of responsibility lead them not to give him any aid. If each of them had enough responsibility for society, they would do something to help him. All people need to take responsibility for their actions.

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message? (Support your claim with evidence from the story)

The main message of the story is that we should look inside people and judge their identities. In other words, we shouldn’t judge people by their appearance although the appearance is a big element when we judge people. In life, many people tend to judge other people’s identity based on looks, clothes, behaviors and people around them. In the story, all anyone regarded Andy as a member of the gang called the Royals because he wore the jacket written “royal”. If he had walked without the jacket, he may not have been killed. If he walked without the jacket, people would just see another man. But importantly, If people in the story hadn’t judged Andy’s identity by what he wore and made the right decision based on his true identity, he wouldn’t have died. Therefore, We need to make the right decision for other people’s identity based on the inside and outside. I think that the story’s main idea connects with the discrimination issue especially racism by skin color. Some people discriminate on the basis of different skin tones, in the worst case, it leads to violence and murder. This is the result that some people judge other people’s identity based on only their appearance. In order to eliminate these sad events, we should judge the identities from the right perspective.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding

If I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding, I would call police or ambulance as soon as possible. It is obvious from his wound and the blood that’s pouring out that he’s seriously injured. After seeing him in such a state and I didn’t do anything, it would be same as killing him. The couple left him and didn’t do anything even though they know his deep wound. They
didn’t stab him directly, but they played a part of the murder. They were really afraid of the Guardians. But what they should have been really afraid of was the fact that they were a part of the murder. I am wondering if they feel any guilt. When they left Andy on the street, fear of the Guardians was bigger than the feeling of guilt. If I will have the similar situation in the future, I would like to choose right way to help people no matter what the situation. I don’t want to live with the feeling of guilt.

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message?

I think the main ideas of this story is that we don’t have to show off or to be a vain person. He was stubbed because of his purple silk jacket with the character “Royal”. And he was so proud of himself. Even if he really was a Royal, was it necessary to go out to the dark street with his purple noticeable jacket with the letter Royal? I don’t think so. Of course it was the killer who was at fault, but if he had not been wearing the purple jacket, he wouldn’t have been killed. As he was laying on the street, he regretted that he should have been Andy. And he tried to take off his jacket. But it was too late. Finally, he could not meet Laura again. It was so sad story but if he didn’t show off or to be vain person, he could live with Laura and his family. A happy future could have been waiting for Andy.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding?

If I saw Andy sleeping on the sidewalk in the rain at night. At first, I thought he was drunk or homeless and I did nothing. As I got closer, I noticed that he had been bitten and was bleeding, to be honest, I was very scared because I had never seen a person who was injured and dying. The first thing I thought was that the criminal might be nearby and attack me and that it would not be a safe place. I would check around quickly to see if I could find clues or evidence. I would leave the place quickly. I would go to a safe place because I am a cautious person and I do not like to die, I do not like anything to happen to me. My life is precious to me. After I went to a safe place, I called the police as soon as possible to reported the incident and asked for help so that I could save him from death. I also helped the police as a witness. The reason I called the police was that I felt I have a responsibility to save him and I should not be indifferent and not care. I know that the lives of all human beings are precious and we must help each other. I felt sorry for the people in this story who were irresponsible. Teaching us in Iran from childhood in primary schools that we should help each other and be friendly with each other. And this is the famous poem, I learned in school( human beings are members of a whole, in the creation of one essence and soul. If one member is afflicted with pain, Other members uneasy will remain. If you have no sympathy for human pain, the name of human you cannot retain).

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message?

I think he had two main ideas in this story, the first is to always be friendly to people and help each other. The second is not to judge people by their appearance because we know nothing about people’s lives. In this story, Andy had gone out to buy cigarettes and was injured. The word royal was written on his jacket. In this story, the word royal belonged to an anti-social group. For example, the young couple did not help him. They saw the word on her dress because they recognized that it belonged to a certain gang. At the end of the story, the police called him royal, even when his wife said his name was Andy. Everyone judged him in appearance.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding? Explain.

If I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding, I would have helped him because he was bleeding and dying. It’s unnormal situation, but most of people will help and call ambulance. However, if he was not bleeding and doesn’t look like dying, I might not help him because it also might be danger to help unknown people on the street, especially if I’m not in Japan because I can’t believe unknown people . For example, in Canada there are lots of Homeless and some of them are sometimes not homeless and just pretending for money or fun. After reading this story, I realized that It is important to help even they’re uknown or there’re doubts, because what I’m seeing is real.

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message? (Support your claim with evidence from the story)
The main ideas of this story is that people can be confused about the right choice when something unexpected happens. In this story, poor Andy was wearing purple silk jacket with the character “Royal”. People imagined from his style, and there is a doubt in people’s mind. For example, in this story, only drunk guy talked him and the young couple called Freddy and Angela realized that Andy is really injured and dangerous, but they couldn’t help because there’s a doubt on heir heart. People realized the truth when he dead, and in real life, it can be happen that people notice the truth when it is too late. There’re also Andy’s memories with Laura in this story, and it make me so sad. From this story, I rethink about what to believe, what I should do when I’m in the place of choice.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding? Explain.

If I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding, I would save him, and I ask around people if they help me. Next that, I would divide a role in people to save him such as calling police and calling a doctor, rescue of life. I try to save his life. In Japan, when people were child, everyone learned the education how to save human life like ethics. If someone lying on the street bleeding, most Japanese help them. However, many people didn’t help him as Andy in the story except Laula. I disappointed it them because they should save him even if there is the reason that they can’t save him. On the other hands, when I see the other point of view, they couldn’t feel that want to help him because they can see homeless and people lying on the street easily in their country. Additionally, people don’t almost encounter this situation because of rare case in Japan. However, if someone or stranger that need to help, people should save them.

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message? (Support your claim with evidence from the story)

The main ideas of the story are that we shouldn’t judge other people by their appearance. In the story, Andy is stabbed because he only wears the back of jacket read THE ROYALS. This Jacket is one group of side having clothes. In the result, his name is Andy nevertheless he dead as the man of Royals. Unfortunately, People tend to consider someone as who joining one group. In life, when people watch the news, some TV show reports one country is danger and rude. Then people temporarily make a mistake that the country is bad as well as the national is bad. It is totally the wrong of thinking. Additionally, the misunderstanding sometimes hurt somebody’s mind. Therefore, perhaps the story expressed as a mentioned it. In conclusion, people tend to judge other people by appearance and group. The people watching news should doubt the information because they sometimes make a mistake. Therefore, people should admit someone as one person.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding? Explain.
If I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding, I would try to help him and call emergency. The reason is that I can’t just leave those who are dying. If I don’t help him, I feel guilty and regret. After reading the story, I couldn’t understand why passer ignore Andy and I wonder if they felt guilty and regret or not. I’m not sure what is The Loyals and why people dislike The Loyals; however, we have to help person who are dying and in trouble. For this reason, even though when I help him, people may blamed me because of the royal, I try to help him.
    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message?
The main message of the story is that we should see through the essence of person without thinking out of the box. There are many stereotypes in our life; however, by having prejudice, we can’t see the facts and truth. In the story, Andy who wore jacket which there are “THE ROYALS” printed on the back lay on the sidewalk bleeding in the rain. He was stabbed by someone who dislike the royals. He tried to get help but walking people didn’t help him. In fact, he just wore the jacket which there are “THE ROYAL” printed and he was not related to the loyals. People saw his jacket and they were under the impression that he was the royal. From this part of story, I think that the story tells us the importance of seeing the essence of person and trying to face person in honesty. If walking people try to check what is he, he didn’t die. In Japan, there is culture which tattoos are disliked by some people. The reason is that tattoos have image of gangster. There are facilities that don’t allow enter people who have tattoos such as public bath and pool. I think that culture should change, and we accept tattoos because thinking of people who has tattoos are gangster is too old. Young people have tattoos for fashionable and they are not related to gangster. Therefore, we should see the essence of person without thinking out of the box.

If I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding, maybe I choose the same action with the couple. However, it is not the completely same action. Though the couple tried to help Andy at first, when they saw Andy’s purple jacket, they stopped Andy helping, because of the fact that they did not want to get mixed up with the Royals or the Guardians. After the couple noticed the existence of Andy, they were afraid of the Guardians who might stab Andy at the same time. They thought that the Guardians might be still close to the area around here. That is the way they could not do anything for Andy. Of course, I can understand the feeling of the couple. I also do not want to get mixed up with the Royals or the Guardians. However, in spite of the fact that they could call a cop even after they left the area, they did not do that. This action is different with me. Surely, it may be afraid to call a cop at just the place. However, if an ambulance car comes to Andy faster than, or if the cop comes to Andy a little bit faster than, maybe Andy did not die. Therefore, if I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding, I would try to help immediately to call a cop or an ambulance car somehow.
    b)
The main message of the story is that we shouldn’t judge people by their appearance. However, I think this is a little bit difficult. In our life, appearance is a really important thing. For example, when we take a job interview, we try to show an interviewer so that can be better than ordinally. This is quite a special situation though. And also, the culture of tattoos is still given the Japanese a scary impression, because Japan does not have this culture. So that, there are places where if people have tattoos, cannot enter the public space such as hot springs. In the story, as the couple saw Andy’s jacket lettering on “THE ROYALS”, they stopped helping Andy. Then, Andy perceived the meaning of this jacket thanks to the couple action, since he tried to take off the jacket. Whereas we should not judge people by their appearance, I think we judge people without noticing it ourselves. Therefore, when we do something different or wear something different from others, we have to recognize that there is a different perspective. Despite a little bit late for Andy, he could recognize finally it. I am a normal person, I prefer same with others. Therefore, I could not understand Andy’s behavior before he recognized the truth. I think that the story which, for youth like 16-year-old Andy, suggests to think about themselves, to recognize as themselves, and to do the action themselves from as early as possible.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding? Explain.
I would helped Andy if I saw him lying on the sidewalk bleeding because I don’t want to abandon the person who has serious injuries if they participate in gang group. In a daily life, I want to avoid associating gang groups such as Royals and Guardians as much as possible. I think that those gang groups are violent and extreme, so the couple gave up to help him. I understand their thought, however I don’t want to regret about my behaving. If I don’t help him, I’ll regret about the fact forever until I die. Therefore, I think that the most realistic way I can help him is calling the hospital or police anonymously. For example, I check his condition at first, and call hospital or police depending on the condition of the injury. If there is anything I can do to stop the bleeding or care for him, I’ll do it. When I hear the siren, I’ll go away quietly. In this way, I don’t need to regret my behaviors, at the same time, I can avoid associating with gang as much as possible. Hence, this is the most realistic way I can help the member of Royal.

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message? (Support your claim with evidence from the story)
I think that there are two main ideas about the judgement of appearance and the fact that status and title are not important in this story. First of all, the author argues that people are judged by their appearance. If he hadn’t wore the purple jacket which is written in Royals, he wouldn’t have stabbed, the couple wouldn’t have abandon to him, he wouldn’t have died. In this story, he claimed that he is Andy in his heart, however people assume he is just one of the Royal’s member. Second of all, the author claims that status and title are not important in our life, At the beginning of story, even if he was stabbed, he was proud of being Royals. When he was fighting his pain, he remembered good memories of Royal. However, he realized that his purple jacket was stupid meaningless thing in his life. In my experience, I quit my job that I kept working for 5 years. I was so worried about how people see me before I quit my job. However, by this decision, I got the new life in Canada and I can live my life as who I am.

    a) What would you have done if you saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding? Explain.

I want to help him if I saw Andy lying on the sidewalk bleeding. However, to be honest, I will not help him directly because I do not want to get in trouble. However, I would call a rescue and a cop. If he does not wear the jacket even if he is a member of the Royal, I would help him. However, he wears the jacket, and I can understand him who he is. I imagen the situation after helping him, and then I could not help him. That is the situation if I am alone or with a friend. However, if I were with a lot of friends, I would help him because if I am in the majority, I am not afraid anything. It is easier to help where there are many people than where there aren’t many people around. Where there are few people, I think I will meet the person who killed that person. Given this, it’s safer where there are a lot of people. For these reasons, it depends on the situation.

    b) What are the main ideas of this story? What is the author’s message? (Support your claim with evidence from the story)

The main message of the story is that we should make our choice carefully. It means Andy should not decide to belong the Royal. He died because of being a member of the group. The Royal was written a lot of times in this story, so the word is the most important. He must have known what the group is. In the story, he said I’m Andy many times and he tried to take off the jacket because he wanted to die as Andy, but people saw only the jacket and said a Royal. In addition to this, people who saw Andy should not decide to ignore him. The first person was drunk and the couple who appeared the second time could surely help him. If they helped him even if it is what the group do, he would not die. However, they saw his jacket which was written Royal and recognized he is bad because he is one of the bad group. They were afraid of that they get in trouble by helping him. For these reasons, each their decision brought death to him. He died only 16 years old.
