  •  What is Nilopfer Merchant’s thesis (The main argument he is making)? What evidence does he provide to support this claim? What are other claims he makes and does he provide examples for these too? Is it possible to disagree with any of his claims? Is her thesis and subsequent claims strong or weak?
  • Analyze his argument first, by taking notes, then explain the main thesis, evidence and claims. If a possible criticism exists, mention it and respond to it. If you disagree, explain why.
  1. take notes

2. identify main arguments (hint, the main thesis is always in the title of the video)

3. what are the other claims?

4. what evidence does the person give?

5. finally, your personal criticism.

answer if it’s a good argument. Based on the evidence, does the conclusion follow.

In every video, there is something wrong. Even if you don’t think the conclusion is wrong, tell me what possible criticism exist.

The video by Nilopfer talking about walking meeting. However, she started the video talking about sitting kill you and sitting has became smoking of our generation. Furthermore, she talks sitting has health consequences for example breast cancer and colon cancer, diabetics type 2. After this, she talks about how she has the idea to the walking meeting. She gives a personal evidence about one day she had a room meting and she need go there. Therewith, she made her own idea instead of going to the coffee meeting you go on a walking meeting.
In my opinion she doesn’t have a good argument because she comperes smoking with sitting, and after she talks about sitting can cause strong diseases like cancer, diabetes. These diseases are can be caused because you eat bad food. She tried to talk about you need to do exercise, but she didn’t bring arguments for this.

In this talking, she argues that to keep our body healthy, we should hold meeting during walking. She said that people spend time sitting for 9.3 hours a day, this is longer than sleeping. Sitting makes people unhealthy and causes some diseases like a cancer. Therefore, she suggested that we should use meeting time as a walking time too.
She also claims two points about walking meeting. One is that we can think out of the box because of walking meeting. The other point is that we can think about problems from different point if you hold walking meeting.
It can be possible to disagree with her opinion. She said that she did walking meeting about 700 times. This is her evidence, however, this is just her case. All people can’t necessarily come up with innovative ideas. I think although, walking meeting is good for our health, it depends on person that we can think of good ideas.

In this video, Nilopfer talks about walking during meetings. I think that she divides her presentation into three parts. In the first part of her presentation, she talks about ill effects on our health by sitting. She says that people spend more time sitting than sleeping. Using a study, she describes that lack of physical activity causes health consequences such as breast cancer, colon cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. In the second part, she explains how and why she experienced a walking meeting for the first time. She had thought we could chose taking care of either our health or obligations until starting this walking meeting. However, afterwards, she realized that we could do both of them at the same time. And then, in the last part, she suggests how wonderful the walking meeting is. The walking meeting allows us to get out-of-the-box thinking and look at the world differently. Finally, she ends her presentation saying “Walk and talk. Walk the talk.”

I think that the first part of her presentation is a good argument. It can also be said that sitting is bad for our health because it’s true that lack of physical activity causes diseases and sitting is one of the lack of physical activities.
I agree with her opinion, but if I had to say, I would say that she had better use some evidences to support her ideas in the last part. The reason is that what she’d most like to say is how awesome walking during meetings is for us. Her claims looks a little weak without some studies.

    1. identify main arguments (hint, the main thesis is always in the title of the video)
She had a new suggestion that is walking meeting. That seems to be odd, but she received a lot of benefits. What are the benefits from a walking meeting are the main arguments in this talk.

    2. What are the other claims?
She said activity, what people do, directly connected people’s health. For example, sitting caused cancer like smoking. However, people are sitting for 9.3 hour a day. After technologies became common, sitting incredibly prevalent.
    3. What evidence does the person give?
She gives evidence that sitting killed people. Also, she gives some personal evidence. First, after she starts a walking meeting, it works for exercise. Second, the walk-talk idea gives better ideas than coffee meeting ideas.

    4. finally, your personal criticism.answer if it’s a good argument. Based on the evidence, does the conclusion follow. In every video, there is something wrong. Even if you don’t think the conclusion is wrong, tell me what possible criticism exist.
This argument is weak because her main point that is what is benefits about walk-talk does not have evidence. Receiver could understand sitting is bad for health, but probability they confused why she changed the meeting style from sitting to walking. Her conclusion is people should try walking meetings. I expected some scientific evidence about walking effect good thinking. If she proofed people get benefits during walk-talk, this argument is more efficient for the receiver.

In this video, Nilofer Merchant talks about walking meeting. According to her opinion, the evidence that Nilofer to provide and support her claim is nowadays people are sitting 9.3 hours a day even more than sleeping. Therefore, sitting has become the smoking of our generation. It causes breast cancer and colon cancer because people have lack of activity. However, it causes not only cancer, also heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. In addition, because people could only take care of their health, or their obligations. Nevertheless, either way, people couldn’t take care of both. Also, Nilofer has other claims about walking meeting which is change her life. For example, getting out of the box thinking, and looking the world differently. In my opinion, her claims are possible to disagree because smoking may directly cause more serious problems. Although sitting is not good for our bodies as well, it doesn’t mean that sitting causes cancer or other diseases directly. Those problems may from other ways. For example, Heredity, or bad habits. As I mentioned before, because she uses smoking to compare with sitting, I don’t think that her claim is strong enough. Moreover, she doesn’t have any evidence to prove walking meeting which can help people to solve problem, look the world differently, or make people more creative. In conclusion, First, sitting doesn’t relate on smoking directly. Second, there is no evidence to prove her claims. Finally, her claims can not truly convince people at all.

In this video, the speaker’s thesis is people not only get fresh air but also create new ideas when they walking meeting. She think most of people taken plenty of time on sitting without activity. Especially, people are sitting 9.3 hours per day more than sleeping. That would cause people get diseases that cancer , heart disease, and diabetes mellitus. About her personal experience, she think walking meeting change her life that make her thinking different and create new ideas.

Analyze his argument first, by taking notes, then explain the main thesis, evidence and claims. If a possible criticism exists, mention it and respond to it. If you disagree, explain why.

In my opinion, It’s possible to disagree with her opinion. First of all, long sitting makes people backache, but according to most of medical researches and doctors said that people get diseases ,because they eat unhealthy food, lack of activity and sleeping. Second, the speaker compared with sitting and smoking. But in her thesis, there is no evidence that sitting is addictive. If people continue in same action or pose(ex. sitting, standing or sleeping) for long time that would reduce to blood circulation. Lastly, if people have a meeting while they are walking, I think they couldn’t confuse on the issue and detail, and the behavior is dangerous. Therefore, I disagree her thesis.

  7. Nilofer Merchant lecture on TED talks notes:
Nilofer Merchant’s thesis statement is that having walking meetings will help us to think outside the box and also helps to keep us healthy at the same time. So, the main argument behind is that sitting too much is harmful for health. Indeed, in average we spend 7.7 hours sleeping and being sitting at least 9.3 hours as result of our lifestyle. Therefore there are many consequences. As evidence for example, according to statistics coronary disease, kinds of cancer and diabetes are related with a sedentary lifestyle. Finally she realize by her own experience that people before used to choose between having a healthy life or spend several hours in their job meetings instead of. So, to put this in a nutshell she learn two main things. First, out of the box thinking what actually is natural of outside works. And secondly, how much people facing problems when it is not necessary though. However, this idea makes sense at first time, but when I think in a different context to implement it, I can not convinced myself of all. For example, despite walking is healthy, is not something everyone is willing to do it for many reasons. Also, his own experience could be not a strong evidence like academic research. So apparently this lecture works barely as an invitation to explore this experience, what makes it turn in an informal but inspiring way to present her thesis.

The main point of this presentation is that holding meetings while you walk can be beneficial. Nilofer Merchant presents some arguments to support her thesis. She says that this kind of meeting helps you to think outside the box. This argument is supported by the fact that nature and physical exercise can help you to think differently. In addition, the fact that you combine an obligation (your job) with a recreation (make exercise) helps you find solutions to possible problems. That is because you are putting things together that were once seen as opposites.
The speaker also says that the meeting can help your health. She supports this argument in the fact that sitting for a long has health consequences. Some diseases are related to the lack of physical exercise. She talks about some examples like breast cancer and diabetes. Thus, the speaker compares a sedentary lifestyle with smoking. She tells us that a lack of physical exercise can also kill. She uses this argument to reinforce the idea that walking is just as important as holding meetings. It can be done together. Then, she ends the video by inviting people to practice this idea.
I think that her thesis was presented in a disorderly manner. The lack of organization in her presentation makes her arguments seem weaker than they really are. Merchant presented real data on the influence of lack of physical activity on our health. This could invite the listener to think about the possibility of holding meetings while walking. Nevertheless, as presented, it seems like an empty argument. After all, it was difficult to associate her argument with her thesis. I believe in creative leisure. I understood what she meant by thinking outside the box while you are practicing physical activity. However, I believe that she should reorganize her points.
